PERSONAL GOALS

Building a strong, shared vision for the district, in which all decisions, policies, regulations and budgets are based on:

  • Enhancing community relations by following a clear policy that reflects a Board’s commitment to open communication and stakeholder involvement.

  • Discussing openly the strengths and weakness of schools, and involving all stakeholders in problem-solving.

  • Being accessible, listening respectfully to all sides of an issue, and responding to concerns.

  • Being a role model for students, teachers, parents, and the community, and acting accordingly.

SCHOOL BOARD RELATIONS

I understand that everyone owns the decisions that are made, and that decisions should always be in the best interest of the education program for our children. This means:

  • Working with the superintendent and staff to develop goals and budgets.

  • Attacking problems, not people.

  • Ensuring improved educational outcomes is always the priority.

  • Having Board self-assessments and yearly evaluations.

  • Making sure we are doing the job for which we were elected, with integrity, and to the very best of our ability.

  • Setting aside 'single issues' and working together in the best interest of all students, employees, and the entire community.

  • Being influential communicators by celebrating successes.

  • Finding reasonable solutions to problems by partnering with schools, parents and communities to advocate for our children.

POLICY MAKING

Board members represent the citizens, acting as a link to the School District. This entails:

  • Setting school district policy and supporting a superintendent who will ensure that policy is put into practice.

  • Acting on superintendent's recommendations in the areas of employment of personnel, student services, adoption of education programs, allocation of funds, and holding him/her accountable.

  • Trusting in those who have been hired to assume these jobs, and holding them accountable.

  • Establishing fair policies that govern recruitment, hiring, employment, supervision and dismissal.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT FOR EDUCATORS

It is critical to invest in the people of our District. Appreciating the value of our employees at all levels requires:

  • Having open and honest communication.

  • Providing opportunities for professional growth.

  • Preserving instructional time by limiting non-instructional responsibilities that interfere with teaching and planning.

  • Ensuring an environment that is free of disruptive or dangerous behavior.

  • Demonstrating respectful treatment and fair evaluation of our teachers.

  • Holding educators reasonably accountable.

CURRICULUM

We must keep the focus on teaching and learning by:

  • Implementing a challenging curriculum which adheres to state and national standards.

  • Dealing with the challenges of "No Child Left Behind."

  • Teaching students to think critically, and not just how to take tests.

  • Ensuring that a solid reading program with proven results is the foundation of our district.

  • Integrating the curriculum with technology when this improves student learning.

  • Providing teachers with the right resources.

FISCAL MANAGEMENT

Expenditures must be for the children. This means:

  • Always ensuring tax dollars are spent wisely.

  • Prioritizing spending to support the most critical and necessary improvements.

  • Supporting piloting research-based programs, collecting data, studying results, and implementing these programs only if  proven successful.

  • Supporting a SPLOST when needs indicate one.

  • Supporting personnel and instructional decisions which directly affect students and their learning outcomes.
